Hypothesis Practice

When you are writing a hypothesis, you need to keep two things in mind.:
Is this hypothesis written as a complete sentence?
   Is this hypothesis testable?

For example.

1.  A student wants to find out what type of music his friends like best.

Answer:  If I play several types of music for my friends, then they will like bluegrass the best.

Is this hypothesis true?  Probably not.  But it is testable.  Also, it is written as a complete sentence and I did use the If...then method.

2.  Your friend wants to know which shoes will make her run the fastest.

Answer:  My friend will run the fastest with sprinting shoes.

I didn't use the If...then method, but it is still a good hypothesis.

Our own Mentos and Soda Experiments

We decided to try to make some soda powered rocket carts for our mentos and soda experiment.  Each class tested a different variable.  Here are the video results.

Mentos and Soda

We will be learning about the Scientific Method this week.  As an example experiment, we will be combining Mentos candy with Soda to create a soda/carbon dioxide geyser.  In years past, we've tried to create the highest geyser.

This year, we will build a soda powered rocket car and tried to launch it as far as possible.  Below is a video from eepybird.com where I got the idea.

Look to this blog for our own video in the future.

Safety Homework

How you behave differs based on the location you are in.  For example, you can run about like a kid in the gym, but not in your classrooms.  Keep these differences in mind during Science class.  We've got a lot of potential hazards here that could be dangerous if you don't adjust your behavior.  Besides these differences, there are plenty of rules that you have at home or in any other classroom that are completely the same as in Science.

Here's an interesting article about the supernova recently spotted.

Day 1 Homework

The math in this homework will lead us into doing metric system conversions.  Just move the decimal left if dividing or right if you are multiplying.  If there is no decimal, that's because it is invisible to the right of the last number.

A New Year in Science Class

Welcome to the Mr. Doran's Science Class blog.  I hope you've all had an equally exciting and relaxing summer vacation.  I had a chance to sail in a bunch of regattas and even bring home some trophies (check the flags in the back of my classroom).  I also just spent a week in Texas to attend the wedding of a good friend of mine.  The temperature was over 100 °F all week long.

This blog is going up for a few reasons:

*I want a somewhat formal channel to relay information to you.
*I want the flexibility to post all kinds of content for you (a bunch of videos)
*I want to give you hints and help on your homework (but make you do a little bit of work to get it)
*I want to give you a place to provide feedback in the comments below.

Let's have a great year in Science class
